<hi style=afpcap>The highly successful Curtiss P-40 design was the last of the Hawk series. Developed into a host of sub-variants, the P-40 served within almost all the theatres during World War Two. One of the first combat debuts for the type was with General Clair Chenault's American Volunteer Group (AVG) which fought against the Japanese in China. One hundred P-40B Tomahawk II's were diverted from a British order to the AVG, which conducted independent operations until absorbed into the USAAF in July 1942.</hi>
